Phaeochroa cuvierii

NOTES

To elaborate our model we removed uncertain localities such as those localities with no coordinates and all records with coordinates laying down in sites with estimated elevations above 519 m.

The habitat suitability model generated in Maxent showed a few areas suitable in climatic terms for this species in Arauca and eastern Norte de Santander. These areas are not known to be occupied by the species and were excluded from the potential distribution map of this hummingbird.

Assuming that the distribution of the species may have filled the complete climatic model generated, its distribution today in remnants of forest is about 3,144 km2, which corresponds to a loss of 97 % of its potential original distribution due to deforestation.

Subspecies berlepschi present in Colombia is endemic to the country. The species is very local and uncommon and occurs in the country in dry forest and mangrove forest, not in the interior of humid forest. Given the severe threat to dry forest we believe that this species in the country must be up-listed to near threatened (NT). There is need of research to know better its ecology and dependence of fragments of forest.

Thick and flat shaft of outer primary, and behaviour and vocalizations suggest that this species may better be placed under genus Campylopterus (HBW Alive 2017).
