To elaborate our model we removed uncertain localities such as those localities with no coordinates and all records with coordinates laying down in sites with estimated elevations below 1,939 m and above 3,100 m.

The habitat suitability model generated in Maxent showed extensively areas suitable in climatic terms for this species in Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and also a very few areas in the northern portion of the Eastern Andes. These areas are not known to be occupied by this hummingbird and were deleted from our final potential distribution map.

This species has been catalogued as Endangered (EN) by BirdLife (2016). According to BirdLife (2016) it is known from a very few locations and its habitat has been severely degraded. The especies is very little known, BirdLife (2016) has estimated its population in 20,000-49,999 individuals, which is allegedly consistent with densities based on congeners and birds of similar body mass. Nevertheless, we think that can be an overestimation of the real population size. BirdLife (2016) has estimated its extent of occurrence in 1,700 km2. Our maps suggest an extent of occurrence just in Colombia of 926 km2, which is well below the threshold of 5,000 km2 to be categorised as Endangered (EN) and this combined with the fact that the paramo areas and elfin forest in Perija are extremely fragmented and threatened, suggests this species must be currently correctly categorised as Endangered (EN). However, there is desperately great need for studies to know better its ecology.
