Phaethornis malaris

NOTES

To elaborate our model we removed uncertain localities such as 'Bogota skins' and all records with coordinates laying down in sites with estimated elevations above 1,144 m. Also two records in BioMap from Magdalena, which represent corrupted data, were deleted previous to model the distribution.

The habitat suitability model generated in Maxent showed areas suitable in climatic terms for this species west of the Andes, particularly in the zones adjacent to the northern Central and Western Andes and extreme northwest Colombia. These areas are not known to be occupied by the species and were excluded from the potential distribution map of this hummingbird.

Distribution of specimens, according to BioMap, suggests at least one possible area (≈ 15,339 km2) of intergradation between subspecies insolitus and moorei, located between central Guaviare and east Caqueta. It is possible this zone spreads further east but currently there are no more specimens from that area and this needs further research.

Assuming that the distribution of the species may have filled the complete climatic model generated, its distribution today in remnants of forest is about 409,574 km2, which corresponds to a loss of 14 % of its potential original distribution due to deforestation.
